DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is University of Malaya’s premier research training degree. The PhD is awarded based on the foundation of the thesis prepared under supervision, resulting in an original and significant contribution, displaying extensive knowledge and comprehension of the subject and field of study.

The PhD programme at the Faculty of Business and Accountancy has undergone stringent peer evaluation and built upon several years of experience in producing quality doctorates in business and accounting. It takes cognizance of emerging needs of educators and researchers in the 21st century. One of the strengths of the programme is the requirement to undertake core courses which strengthen the foundation for all doctoral students to enhance their research journey.

PhD students will carry out focused research in their area of specialisation, which is of immediate relevance to local interest. Additionally, they will be attentive to the challenges faced in the international arena through the media, seminars, conferences and keynote addresses.

Graduates with PhD degree may pursue their career in academic line in institutions or to become a researcher in any research institute.

The Doctor of Philosophy programme comprises courses and a thesis. Candidates are required to pass (1) core course and one (1) additional course as stipulated by the Faculty before submitting the thesis. Candidates must submit a research thesis with a reasonable number of words not exceeding 100,000 words at the end of the programme.

In addition to the core courses, students are required to take one (1) additional course (3 credit hours each) at FBA or at other faculties depending on the chosen area of research, to be determined by the department.

(3) CVA8003 Marketing Issues and Practices

(4) CVA8004 Operations Management and Information System Issues and Practices

(5) CVA8005 Business Management Issues and Practices

Additional Programme Requirements

• Proposal Defense by Semester II

• Candidature Defense by Semester III - V

• Doctoral Colloquium presentation every semester starting from Semester IV

• Progress Report submission at the end of every semester

Doctoral Colloquium

The faculty organizes Colloquium every semester for candidates to present the progress of their research. The colloquium is attended by the academic staff, local and international evaluators and all PhD candidates.

The objectives of the Doctoral Colloquium are to provide:

• Feedback from the faculty members and other in the form of ideas and insight of the research

• Opportunity to discuss and compare research methodologies and evaluate recent contributions in the fields

• Exposure to the area of research

• Avenue to strengthen and enhance presentation and communication skills

• Opportunity for networking

Applicants for the programme should posses:

  1. Possess a Bachelor’s degree with honours or equivalent in a related field from a recognised university, priority is given to candidates who have a Bachelor degree with a CGPA of at least 3.0 or equivalent;
  2. A Master’s degree in a related field from a recognised university, with a CGPA of at least 3.0 or equivalent; or
  3. At least a band 6.0 for IELTS or a minimum score of 550 for the paper based TOEFL (for international applicants)
